The Miraculous Journey of Gordy Wyatt

This month, Stroll Inside the Gates would like to spotlight Gordy Wyatt, an exceptional young man who has had to endure a hardship no one should ever have to face. Last year, Gordy received a leukemia diagnosis, altering his life and the lives of his loved ones in the blink of an eye.

Gordy and his family have an unbelievably difficult road ahead, but they remain hopeful and optimistic thanks to the incredible care and support of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center.

“In September 2025, Gordy received a title I never imagined would belong to him: a cancer kid,” recounts Annie Wyatt, Gordy’s mother. “Two words that should never go together: cancer and kid. Two words that together instantly bring fear, uncertainty and heartbreak. Suddenly, the future looked nothing like we had planned.”

“But on diagnosis day, Gordy was given another title: an Aflac Kid. To most people, Aflac is an insurance company. To our family, it's the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at CHOA—the place that has become our second home and where Gordy receives his treatment. It's a place of hope, compassionate care, and the promise that no matter how hard this journey becomes, there is an entire team dedicated to giving our son the very best chance at tomorrow.”

On July 23rd and 24th, Gordy took part in the annual WSB Care-a-Thon, which raises money for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. The event took place at the Arthur M. Blank Hospital, home of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. This 26th annual fundraiser was a huge success, raising a record-breaking 2.3 million dollars!

“As many of you know, Gordy's journey hasn't been easy,” continues Annie. “We've celebrated big victories, but we've also walked through some incredibly difficult days. We're forever grateful for Gordy's doctors, whose expertise has guided every step of his treatment. But we've also learned that healing takes an entire team.”

“We're grateful for the nurse who doesn't hesitate when Gordy spikes a fever while neutropenic, because she knows what every leukemia parent quickly learns: minutes matter. We’re grateful for the lab professional who monitors his blood cultures through the night, and for the infectious disease specialist who painstakingly flipped through a picture book of fungi—yes, really—to identify the infection threatening Gordy as quickly as possible."

"We’re grateful for the care tech who took Gordy to the library to play video games, giving me a few precious moments to breathe; for the Child Life specialist who always seems to know exactly when Gordy needs a new LEGO set to keep his mind busy; for the pharmacist who quietly prayed over Gordy's medicine; and for the EVS team member who walked into his room each day with a smile that somehow made the hospital feel a little less like, well, a hospital. These people are the heart of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. And while many of them may never ask for recognition, they are exactly why the Care-a-Thon matters. Every donation helps advance pediatric cancer research, train the next generation of specialists through fellowship programs, support Child Life and family services, and ensure children like Gordy continue to receive not only world-class medicine, but extraordinary care.”

“We'll never be grateful that Gordy became a cancer kid. But we will always be grateful that he became an Aflac Kid.”
