Student Spotlight: Matthew Lewis
Matthew Lewis, the son of Julie and David Lewis, is a recent graduate of Lake Oconee Academy and has a knack for communication. Whether he’s studying the Spanish tongue, calling plays as a middle linebacker, or fishing with his neighbors, Matthew is endlessly seeking opportunities to interact with the world around him. This month, Stroll Lake Oconee had the chance to hear Matthew’s story firsthand and learn what it takes to be such a versatile student.
Matthew is an honors student and an AP Scholar who sees learning as an opportunity to polish his communication skills – a discipline he is driven to master. “My favorite subject is Spanish because it allows me to communicate with more people”, he says. “Spanish class also gave me the opportunity to get my International Skills Diploma Seal (ISDS), which certified that I was prepared to engage in a global economy.” Matthew is abundantly grateful for the long-standing relationships that have prepared him to pursue his academic ambitions. “Dr. Warner, my favorite teacher, has supported me throughout my academic career. She’s been teaching me since I was four”, he recalls. “She always took the time to make me feel like I mattered when I was little”.
Matthew may be a lifelong learner, but he’s no stranger to pads and a jersey. After stepping onto LOA’s football field for his fourth and final high school season last fall, Matthew reflects on countless years spent as a middle-linebacker and guard. With JV and varsity experience, alongside a GRIT award under his belt, it’s a glaring truth: Matthew is a talented team-player, dedicated to his craft.
Matthew’s gift for communication and collaboration isn’t bound by LOA’s campus, however. “I’ve enjoyed volunteering for Vacation Bible School at Bethesda Baptist Church and participating in the Sheds of Hope Project at Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church”, he states. “My mom is a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), and I’ve had the experience of helping her at CASA-sponsored special events for children in foster care.”
When he isn’t volunteering, Matthew spends his free time with nature and his neighborhood friends. “Growing up in a community where I know my neighbors is one of my favorite aspects of living in Reynolds”, he says. “I can come home from school, put my boat in the lake and fish whenever I’m able.” Matthew is not only an avid fisherman, but a hunter too. “I enjoy both freshwater and saltwater fishing, and we have property in Gray, GA where I hunt deer and turkey”, he adds.
As the summer soon draws to a close, Matthew confronts the excitement of college. “My biggest motivation has always been the desire to take on new challenges and projects”, he asserts. “I’ll be attending Georgia Southern University this fall and majoring in Business Management. I plan on one day going into the healthcare industry as a medical device professional.” Despite the challenges that lie await, Matthew tackles the future with confidence and ambition, strengthened by his parents’ untiring support. After all, college is filled with opportunities to improve one’s community – and no one has a better track record than Matthew Lewis.
