Shoes, Stories, and Smiles Rotary Club Brings Joy to 66 Students During Bi-Annual “Shoes For Kids” Event

Gleaming smiles, proud steps, and grateful hearts defined the morning of September 13 as 66 students from Greene and Putnam Counties boarded school buses for a field trip unlike any other. Their destination: Rack Room Shoes in Athens, Georgia. Their mission: to find the perfect pair of shoes — and feel seen, valued, and cared for – a chance to walk a little taller.
This joyful outing was part of the bi-annual “Shoes For Kids” event, hosted by the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties, a Club initiative dedicated to providing children with more than just material goods — it delivers dignity, confidence, and connection.
Upon arrival, students were greeted by a host of Rotarians and volunteers who personally assisted them in selecting brand-new shoes and socks. For many of the children, this was their first experience choosing shoes just for themselves — and it showed in their excited smiles and careful decisions.
Rotarian Bob Massey brought along his beloved therapy dog, Sandy, who shared plenty of love, comfort, and furry hugs with everyone throughout the day.
In addition to footwear, each child received a book through Rotary’s “Books For Kids” initiative — another beloved program focused on promoting childhood literacy and joy through reading.
No morning is complete without breakfast, and thanks to the generosity of Chick-fil-A, every student enjoyed a warm, delicious chicken biscuit to kick off the day.
“That simple gesture went a long way,” said Ashley Goodroe, Rotary member and event volunteer. “It gave the kids comfort, energy, and just one more reason to smile. We’re incredibly grateful for Chick-fil-A’s support.”
Beloved local leader Rev. Avis Williams was on hand to share words of encouragement, lifting spirits and reminding everyone present — children and adults alike — of the deeper mission behind the event. Her presence added a spiritual and emotional layer to the event.
The event wrapped up with children boarding buses back home, all clutching their new shoes, socks, and books — physical reminders of kindness, generosity, and the power of community.
“Even if a child never says it out loud, we hope they carry this — knowing someone believes in them,” stated Jennifer Pennington, Rotary Club President.
For the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties, Shoes For Kidsis more than an outreach event; it’s a transformational experience, both for the children served and the volunteers who give their time.
