Family Spotlight: The Maguire Family
This month, Stroll Inside the Gates recognizes the Maguire family. Sean and Amy Maguire both hail from central Kentucky – Sean is from Lexington, while Amy grew up in Mt. Sterling. Sean graduated from Xavier University in Ohio with a finance degree prior to becoming a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA). Amy completed her undergraduate degrees in economics and psychology at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. The couple first met after they graduated from college, while they were part of the Fifth Third Bank Management Training program. “There were about 25 of us that did everything together,” recounts Amy. “That included kayaking, hiking, Reds games, dinners, skiing, and traveling. In addition to finding each other, many of those friends are lifelong friends!”
Sean and Amy have two adult children, Megan and Molly Maguire. Megan lives in Cincinnati and works in research for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She is also a Graduate Assistant for Xavier University and manages The Store, Xavier’s food pantry. Molly is graduating from Elon University in May and starting her Master’s in Exercise Science at James Madison University in Virginia. The Maguire’s have also been blessed with Patches and Shamrock, two shelter cats. Shamrock sadly passed last year, but both cats brought many years of joy to the family.
Sean and Amy lived in Orlando for seven years after marrying in 1995. While there, Sean worked with SunTrust, and Amy worked with Orlando Health. The couple moved to Belleair, Florida in 2001 and raised their family in the Tampa Bay area. After moving to Florida, Sean and Amy fell in love with triathlon (swimming, biking, and running). They also fell in love with cold plunges to keep free from injury. They trained with a group of about 25 friends. As their endurance and skill grew, they completed the Ironman (which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run). Training on Saturdays consisted of “bricks”, which is some combination of running 15-20 miles, biking 50-75, and swimming at least a mile. Their recovery included alternating between their hot tub and a plastic baby pool of ice for recovery.
Amy spent over 25 years in healthcare lobbying for Johns Hopkins, Orlando Health, and Coke Florida. She also ran her own practice for several years. Now, she leads the Florida Policy Project, a think tank that conducts research in housing affordability, insurance, criminal justice reform, and transportation. Sean is a CFA and has spent his career in wealth management, serving as a Vice President at SunTrust and Northern Trust and as Market President for BNY Mellon. Sean is currently a managing director at Homrich Berg Wealth Management.
In addition to their corporate occupations, Amy and Sean also own and operate The Well. Their dream of moving to Reynolds was always to create a place where people could gather in community, share stories, learn and listen, and talk about their wellness journey. Sean and Amy considered a coffee shop/bookstore concept, but, knowing their lifelong dedication to exercise and health, they wanted to find a way to continue this passion. Sean and Amy believe wholeheartedly in the importance of mental and physical health, and they found their Reynolds neighbors to be equally committed to these concepts.
“We hope The Well will continue to be a place for health, wellness and building community,” state Sean and Amy. “In addition to Nordic sauna and cold plunging, we offer regular seminars where we bring in local experts on critical topics, and we offer a location for book clubs, birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette events, friendly gatherings, and, of course, a wide variety of fitness classes. We hope to be the source people will seek as they walk their wellness path. We believe in community impact and want nothing more than to help make Georgia’s Lake Country stronger and healthier. Our plans are big, and we hope to use the expertise of this area to bring more longevity to the community.”
Sean and Amy first fell in love with Reynolds Lake Oconee over 20 years ago. “In 2005, Sean and I attended the Masters and stayed at Reynolds,” Amy recalls. “From that moment on, we knew that we would call Reynolds our ‘forever home’. We visited at least once a year and brought family and friends. The stars finally aligned in late 2023. We were sitting on a porch overlooking Great Waters and decided to take the leap!”
“Our favorite part about living in this community is the people!” add Amy and Sean. “Reynolds brings us back to our Kentucky roots: kindness, respect, and generosity. Plus, the golf courses and Lake Oconee are second to none.”
To give back to Georgia’s Lake Country, Sean and Amy support many of their favorite not-for profits. Among their civic engagement in Florida, Amy served on various boards including: the YMCA Board, a school for the neurodiverse, the local domestic shelter, Orlando Health Bayfront, and the Boys and Girls Club, to name a few. Sean served on the Boggy Creek Board, Chaired a local school board, and supports many academic institutions. “We are leaning in to be engaged with these among many others,” continues Amy. “We have become involved in several local not-for-profits. Every quarter, The Well collaborates with a local organization to fundraise and promote their brand. We have partnered with schools, the Humane Society, the Food Pantry, local Chambers, and shelters. We plan to do even more in 2025!” Sean and Amy have donated thousands to this community already.
In their free time, Sean and Amy enjoy hiking, reading, yoga, and mindfulness work. Sean is also an avid aviation enthusiast and a private pilot. “We love hiking all over Georgia and experiencing all the fabulous towns across the state. We also love bringing guests to the Lake, so many more can fall in love with this community just like we did.”
