An Holistic Approach to Wellness. A Healthier Way to Age

By Carlyle Place Life Plan Advisor, Robin Dance

For many retirees, the idea of remaining in your own home as you age seems best. A house holds memories, independence, and familiarity, and for as long as it is safe and easy to maintain, aging in place can be a wonderful choice. However, in my personal experience and in my role as a life plan advisor, I’ve observed how life has a way of changing quickly. Health needs can shift, a fall can alter mobility, or caregiving demands can exceed what family and home resources can provide. If you live alone or far from family, isolation breeds its own set of problems.

My coworkers and I agree with the experts: It’s critical to plan before a crisis occurs. Identifying where you would want to live if assisted living or long‑term healthcare becomes necessary, and securing a place on waiting lists early are two of the most empowering decisions you can make. Planning ahead preserves choice, reduces stress, and ensures that if or when the need arises, you are prepared to transition into a community that aligns with your values and lifestyle.

Planning ahead involves investigating your options, making comparisons, and then determining what is most important to you…long before you’re “ready” or have need. If you value agency in making these decisions for yourself and/or want to position yourself for future opportunities, don’t wait.

To help get you started, I’ll give you a bird’s eye view of Carlyle Place in Macon where a philosophy of intentional planning is paired with a long-demonstrated holistic approach to wellness. Our hope is that residents move in when they’re active and fully independent and can take advantage of every good thing a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) like ours has to offer—a lifestyle that supports residents throughout every chapter of aging, not only when care needs begin to surface.

At Carlyle Place “wellness” isn’t just a buzzword, it’s our way of life. For us, wellness is built on years of research into successful aging and focuses on three essential goals: maintaining physical and cognitive function, staying actively engaged in life, and staving off disease and disability. This approach is manifested through six interwoven pillars of wellness: physical, social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and occupational. Together, these pillars create an environment where residents feel supported, connected, and purposeful.

Moving With Purpose: Physical Wellness

Physical wellness begins with the understanding that movement is essential for maintaining independence and quality of life. Residents are encouraged to stay active through a variety of traditional and non‑traditional fitness options, including group exercise classes, access to and instruction for our state-of-art gym, walking trails, and interactive activities such as Wii Bowling, line dancing, and clogging.

Nutrition education and wellness awareness further support healthy choices that build energy, balance, and strength. Programs are designed with flexibility in mind, ensuring residents of varying abilities can participate safely while continuing to enjoy life on their own terms.

A Community That Connects: Social Wellness

Strong relationships are a cornerstone of well‑being, and Carlyle Place offers abundant opportunities for social connection. Parties and dances, happy hours, men’s breakfasts, group outings, and musical groups bring residents together in ways that are both joyful and meaningful.

These shared experiences foster friendship, reduce loneliness, and create a true sense of belonging. For many residents, the social support they gain becomes just as valuable as the physical amenities of the community.

Curiosity at Every Age: Intellectual Wellness

Lifelong learning is celebrated at Carlyle Place. Residents are invited to keep their minds active through Lunch & Learns, technology classes, guest speakers, and taking courses at WALL (Wesleyan Academy for Lifelong Learning).

Whether learning a new skill or exploring a topic of interest with fellow residents, intellectual wellness supports cognitive health while reminding residents that curiosity and growth do not diminish with age.

Caring for the Inner Self: Emotional Wellness

Emotional well‑being is nurtured through a supportive, positive environment. In addition to our wellness nurse, peer support groups help residents manage stress and navigate life transitions.

Even small touches—such as access to a hair and nail salon—contribute to confidence and emotional balance, reinforcing the importance of self‑care at every stage of aging.

Meaning, Reflection, and Peace: Spiritual Wellness

Carlyle Place embraces spiritual wellness through an inclusive, multi‑denominational approach that honors diverse beliefs. Opportunities range from Sunday school, Bible studies, and communion services to meditation, relaxation classes, and quiet reflection in the meditation room.

These offerings provide comfort, grounding, and meaning—helping residents feel centered and supported through both joyful and challenging seasons of life.

Purpose That Endures: Occupational Wellness

Purpose does not expire with retirement. At Carlyle Place, occupational wellness encourages residents to share their talents, pursue hobbies, volunteer, and lead activities that reflect their interests and experiences. Whether through resident‑led programs, service to local charities, or games and creative pursuits, residents continue contributing in meaningful ways.

By planning ahead and choosing a community that supports every dimension of wellness, older adults protect their independence while preparing wisely for the future. At Carlyle Place, residents have found not just a place to live—but a place to thrive, today and for years to come.

Planning ahead gives you choices and peace of mind.
